The Region

Australia’s Mid West region covers more than 470,000 square kilometers. It comprises almost one fifth of the State and the regional centre, Geraldton, is about four hours’ drive from the State’s capital city Perth. The coastal part of the region enjoys a Mediterranean climate and some of the best weather to be experienced in Australia.

Map of our regionMore than 65,000 people reside in the Mid West with the bulk of the population concentrated in towns along the coast. The major centre is Geraldton with a population of approximately 35,000 including outlying areas. Other major centers in the region include the coastal communities of Carnarvon, Exmouth, Kalbarri, Dongara and Jurien and inland communities such as Meekatharra, Morawa and Mullewa. Indigenous people represent 8% of the Midwest population but this varies dramatically between 1% for some coastal towns like Exmouth and over 20% for inland towns like Meekatharra and Mt Magnet.

Geraldton is a progressive city with well planned shopping avenues, modern community facilities and a range of housing and infrastructure designed to take its community into the twenty first century. The region is fully serviced by extensive road, rail, air and sea transport infrastructure and offers excellent cultural and educational opportunities.
The economic base for the region is diverse and includes mining, agriculture, fishing, tourism and the service sector.
Few places in the world can boast the quality of life and bright outlook promised by Australia’s Mid West. The Mid West is a region full of history, natural attractions and recreational opportunities, making it a prime destination for tourists and settlers.
