Education for GPs

With approximately half of the Midwest GP Network’s GPs practising in rural and remote areas, we play a major role in making Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accessible to all our members. Our Program Officer can help you to access CPD as following ways:

  • Face to Face:
    • The post-graduate talks are held every Friday Morning (except school holidays) from 7.30am – 8.30am in the Training Room of the St John of God Specialist Centre. With a wide variety of topics being presented by visiting medical specialists, local medical specialists and our own Divisional GPs there is always great discussion at each session. The presentations are also shown live at Carnarvon Rural Clinical School via Web-streaming.
    • Obstetrics small group learning are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except school holidays) from 7.30am – 8.30am in the Training Room of the St John of God Specialist Centre.
    • Workshops are organised on regular basis to suit the needs of our members, to improve the knowledge and skills of our members as well as to meet some of the colleges’ requirements (RACGP or ACRRM). They also provide peer support to GPs through the associated dialogue with colleagues and using the meetings to generate new ideas for Network business.
  • Interactive CD-ROMs, videos and DVDs ( Rural Health Education Foundation and Rural Doctors Broadcasts) ,
  • Online learning:
  • Web-streaming technology:
    • Why not see the Friday morning talks live from your office? Click here to see our live web stream or a recording of a past presentation.

Rural Medical Family Network

Rural Medical Family Network logoThe Rural Medical Family Network (RMFN) consists of a group of voluntary area representaives who are medical spouses living and working throughout rural Western Australia. Members of the group, including support staff at Rural Health West are always accessible to provide information, practical assistance and emotional support to other medical families.

The RMFN acknowledges that communication and interconnection between rural medical families enriches their country way of life. A rural doctor's family plays a crucial role in his or her decision to take up and remain in rural practice. Research has shown that, if the spouse and children are happy in a particular location, the doctor is more likely to stay.

The RMFN is administered by a Family Support Project Officer, Wendy Williams, who is based at Rural Health West. Wendy and the committee work together to provide:

  • Contact, information and visits to medical families relocating to rural areas
  • Statewide peer support and networking
  • Regional Social Events
  • Telephone counselling service
  • After Hours newsletter
  • Education and employment support for spouses via the retraining bursary program.

The RMFN also works collaboratively with Rural GP Divisions/ Networks in meeting needs of medical families and is funded by Rural Health West and the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Doctors and their families newly arrived in remote or rural WA are strongly encouraged to make contact with the Rural Medical Family Network.

Midwest GP Network proudly supports the RMFN program. For more information contact Fred Block on 9920 7100 or fred@gpnetwork.org.au
